Beware of Deer

Every year, an estimated 1.5 million auto claims are between a deer and an automobile.  Several hundred people are killed, thousands are injured and more than $1 billion in damages are caused to vehicles.

Nationwide, U.S. roadways have seen nearly a 20% increase in deer claims over the last 5 years.  Although they can happen all year long, the peak period for these type claims is October through December.  And over the past 10 years, the cost of these type claims has almost doubled.

Obviously, whenever you are driving through deer crossing zones, be careful.  Deer run into the road all the time and you may not see one coming.  They also tend to move in groups, so if you do see one, be prepared for more.  Just before sunrise and during sunset are the times that are the highest risk for deer/car claims.

If your full attention is on the road, you’ll be better able to spot approaching animals with your peripheral vision.  Get in the habit of scanning the roadside as you drive.  And use your high beams in the dark whenever possible.  This will give you more time to react to animals that may be in the road.  Also, keep your speed down at night.  Do not try to swerve around the animal as this may cause you to lose control or hit another vehicle, which could be much worse than hitting the deer.

If you do hit a deer, do not touch it, as the injured animal might hurt you.  Instead, try to get your car to the side of the road and call the Police.  Then contact your Independent Insurance Agent.  An accident with a deer or other animals is covered under the Comprehensive portion of your auto policy.
